私が初めて外国人を見たのは16歳の時でした。
56年前です。ニュースは、国内だけでした。
最近、交通手段の進歩や通信技術の進歩により、世界はますます小さくなっています。
最近は、アメリカの大統領選が日本の国内報道のように報道されています。
鎌ヶ谷市はニュージーランドのワカタネと姉妹都市になったのが26年前です。
その時、最初に日本に来たグループの中にボランさんがいました。
私たちも12年前にワカタネのボランさんの家に行ったことがあります。
彼らは、まだホテルを経営していました。
今回、ボランさんのフェイスブックから、彼の孫が姉妹都市プログラムで日本に来ることを知りました。
先先週の金曜日に、彼らの孫、コール君に会いました。まるで親戚の子が来てくれたようで嬉しかったです。
日本の地球の反対側には ウルグアイがあります。
ウルグアイの剣道のチームは、8月にイタリアで行われた世界剣道大会に参加しました。
私の剣道ボランティアとして ウルグアイに行っている佐藤先生からはウルグアイの彼らの様子を知らせるメールが時々入ってきます。
ウルグアイが隣の町のように感じます。
昔、イースター島には、２万人ぐらいの人々が部族に別れ住んでいました。しかし、食糧問題から部族間の戦争を繰り返し、3000人ぐらいになったそうです。
それからは、部族ごとの信仰をやめ、共通の信仰を作り、平和にくらしたということです。
つまり、小さな島で、共通の宗教を持つことによって、平和に暮らせるようになったということです。
同じように私たちの世界は小さくなりました。ここで、私たち人類が共通した一つの宗教を持つことができれば、戦争を終わらせることができるでしょう。

This time, I learned from Mrs. Bullen’s Facebook that his grandson will be coming to Japan as part of the sister city program. Last Friday, I met their grandson, Cole. I was so happy, as if a relative had come to visit.
On the other side of the world from Japan is Uruguay.
The Uruguayan kendo team participated in the World Kendo Championships held in Italy in August.
I occasionally receive e-mails from Mr. Sato, who is in Uruguay as one of kendo volunteers, my successor, telling me how things are going in Uruguay.
It feels like Uruguay is the next town over.
