私は、長生きして嬉しいことがありました。
防衛大OB会主催のテニス大会に初めて参加しました。
OB会は、他にもゴルフ大会や囲碁大会をしています。
私は何も参加していませんでした。
防衛大学の卒業生は、約400人いました。多分そのうちの40人は死んでいると思います。
スポーツもできないという人は、半分ぐらいいると思います。
今年の2月にテニス大会に出る選手の人数が足りないからと、練習に誘われました。
テニス大会には、10人の選手が必要なのです。
私は、1974年に卒業した学生です。それを私たちは、18期生と呼んでいます。
というわけで、5月に、テニス大会で18期生の選手として初めて参加しました。
今年は、一回戦で敗退しました。例年は、ほぼ優勝していたそうです。
それで、今年から2か月毎に練習会をやろうとしています。
私は、今日の午前中には、八街で3人でテニスの練習をしてきました。
今年から同期のテニス仲間に会って驚きました。
卒業後それぞれ陸海空に別れて勤務していたため、半分以上の人が誰かわかりませんでした。
しかし、同じ場所で苦労したという連帯感が湧いてきて、気持ちよくテニスをすることができました。
練習では、航空幕僚長になったものも、偉くならなかった人も共に友達のように話します。
まるで学生時代に戻ったようでした。
こんな嬉しい経験ができたのも長く生きていたからだと思いました。
I have had the joy of living a long life.
I participated in a tennis tournament hosted by the National Defense Academy Alumni Association for the first time.
The Alumni Association also holds golf and Go tournaments.
I did not participate in any of them.
There were about 400 graduates of the National Defense Academy. I think 40 of them are probably dead.
I think about half of them are unable to play sports.
I was invited to practice because there were not enough players to participate in the tennis tournament in February of this year.
Ten players are needed for the tennis tournament.
I am a student who graduated in 1974. We call that the 18th class.
So, in May, I participated in the tennis tournament against the 19 class for the first time as a player of the 18th class.
This year, we lost in the first round. I heard that our class would win almost every year.
So, starting this year, we are planning to hold practice sessions every two months.
This morning, I practiced tennis with three other people in Yachimata city.
I was surprised to meet my tennis friends on Febrary.
After graduation, we all served in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, so I didn’t know more than half of the tennis friends.
But I felt a sense of solidarity, having struggled in the same military service, and I was able to play tennis comfortably.
At practice, both men who became high ranking officers such as Chief of Staff of the Air Self-Defense Force and men who didn’t become high ranking officers talk to each other as if they were old friends.
It was as if we were back in our student days.
I think it’s because I’ve lived a long life that I’ve been able to have such happy experiences.
