私は、先週、江戸時代のそろばんを初めて見ました。
先週私は、藤枝市に剣道の先生を訪ねて、稽古するために行きました。
私が、泊まったところは東海道の岡部宿というところでした。
そこは、東海道の21番目の宿場町です。
今でもたくさんの老人達が東海道を歩いています。
宿は、そういう人たちが利用する旅館でした。
老人たちは、なぜ東京から大阪まで歩くのでしょうか。
それは東海道の宿場町には、今でも昔の風情が残っているからです。
岡部宿には、江戸時代に建てられた旅籠「柏屋（かしばや）」の建物などが残っていました。そこは、資料館となっていて、旅人の様子を知ることができます。
そこで、私は、はじめて上に2玉、下に5玉のそろばんを初めて見ました。
そろばんの玉は、16進法で動かしていたそうです。
これが明治時代に上に1玉下5玉になり、1930年代に現代の形になったそうです。
私は、そろばんは、昔から上に1玉、下に玉だと思い込んでいました。
私は、人々の知恵の進化を感じました。
私は、何気ない普通の物に人々の知恵が集まってできていると感じました。
Abacus in Edo period
I saw an Edo period abacus for the first time last week.
Last week I went to Fujieda City to visit my kendo teacher and practice Kendo.
The place I stayed was called Okabe-juku on the Tokaido, Tokai main-road line from Tokyo to Osaka.
It is the 21st post town on the Tokaido.
There are still many old people walking along the Tokaido.
I stayed at an Inn, a ryokan used by such old people.
Why do old people walk from Tokyo to Osaka?
This is because the post towns on the Tokaido still retain the atmosphere of the past.
In Okabe-juku, buildings such as the inn “Kashibaya” built in the Edo period remained. There is a museum where you can learn about travelers.
Then, for the first time, I saw an abacus with 2 beads on the top and 5 beads on the bottom.
It seems that the balls on the abacus were moved in hexadecimal notation.
In the Meiji era, this became 1 top and 5 bottom, and it became the modern shape in the 1930s.
I have always believed that the abacus has one ball on the top and one on the bottom.
I felt the evolution of people’s wisdom.
I felt that people’s wisdom was gathered in every ordinary thing.
