なぜイスラム社会では豚を食べないのか。
今まで私は、イスラムの人々が、豚を食べないのは、衛生的でないからだと理解していました。
つまり、豚を食べると病気になりやすいので、モハメッドは禁止したのだろうと思っていました。
しかし、先週の土曜日に松本仁一さんという人の「アフリカを食べる」という講演を聞きました。
彼は、朝日新聞の記者で最初にケニアに赴任したそうです。
その時、最初に取材に出かけたのはマサイ族だったそうです。
マサイ族の若者は13歳から結婚するまで牛とともに放牧生活をします。
マサイ族の若者は、朝食に牛の血を飲んでいました。
そこで、彼も飲まされたそうです。血と牛乳を混ぜて飲むと美味しかったということです。
そこで、彼はどうして牛の血を飲むのかと考えました。
そして気づいたそうです。
サバンナの草原では、他にビタミンをとる方法がありません。
牛が食べた草からビタミンを取るしかありません。
牛なら草を反芻して食料にすることができますが、人間には、その土地で畑を作る事はできません。
これで気付いたそうです。
イスラム社会では、豚を食べないのは、人と同じものを食べる豚は、食料を奪い合うことになるので禁止したのだろう。
私は、この説明が一番納得できる説明だと思いました。
今日は、なぜイスラムでは豚を食べないのかという理由が分かったという話でした。

Until now, I understood that Muslims do not eat pork because it is unsanitary.
In other words, eating pork made people more likely to catch an illness, so Mohammed banned pork.
However, last Saturday, I heard a lecture by Mr. Jinichi Matsumoto on “Eating Africa.”
He was the Asahi Shimbun agent to go to Kenya at first.
When he arrived, he went out for the Maasai tribe.
Maasai youth graze with cows from the age of 13 until they get married, around 20.
Maasai youths eat cow’s blood for breakfast.
They treated him to the same food. He reluctantly also drank it . He drank blood mixed with milk , and it tasted good.
So he wondered why they drank cow’s blood.
And he understood.
There is no other way to get vitamins in the savanna grasslands.
The only way to get vitamins is from the grass that cows eat.
Cows can ruminate grass for food, but humans cannot make fields on the land.
Then he noticed this reason.
Pigs that eat the same food as humansIn, Pigs will compete with humans for food,
so Islamic society prohibited pork.
I found this explanation to be the most understandable one.
Today, I now understand why Muslims do not eat pork.
